The NHS tells us that around one in three adults over 65 who live at home will have at least one fall a year, and about half of these will have more frequent falls.
As part of the Better Together in Home project, a group of partners have come together to share information about the services they deliver and in one case have developed a pilot service that can now assist lifting people who have fallen in their home.
All the services are aimed at keeping people independent and in their own home. This could be from making some simple adaptations to reduce the risk of falls, or it could be help to improve overall health or education and coping strategies to deal with long term conditions.
Chronic Health Conditions and Medication
Conditions such as heart disease, dementia and low blood pressure (hypotension), can cause dizziness and a brief loss of consciousness.
Medication can reduce mental alertness and affect balance
Homes are full of hazards and the most common causes range from wet floors, dim lighting , stairs, poorly secured carpets and rugs.
Poor eyesight from conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma alter depth perception and visual acuity which can contribute to falls.
Weakness and Low Balance
Weakness in the muscles and lack of mobility can often contribute to many falls. Improving core strength and physical health can help reduce the risk of falls.
Services Available in South Ribble
There are a range of services available in South Ribble which can help address the causes of falls, and help to reduce or remove the risk.
Awareness of these services was raised as part of this project at our Falls Prevention event on February 25th, at Samlesbury Hall in South Ribble.
A brief summary of these services is detailed below and a copy of the presentation is available to download to your right.
